Emma Johansson is preparing for Open du Suède. On Tuesday she won the first stage of Thüringen Rundfahrt, showing she’s in great shape.

Emma Johansson is by far the hottest Swedish female rider in Open du Suède in Vårgårda. She’s now second in the 2010 UCI Women Road World Cup. Only Marianne Vos has more points. The Dutch riders has 198 points, Emma Johansson 125.

- Of course it’s a tough situation, Emma Johansson admits, but I will take one race at the time and hopefully score more points than Marianne.

Every rider in the winning team in the team time trial in Vårgårda will be rewarded 35 World Cup points, the riders in the runner up team 30 points. For third place the riders get 25 points.

Last year Marianne Vos gained two more points than Emma Johansson in the team time trial. This season their teams are still equally strong so it’s in the road race that Emma Johansson has a chance to even the World Cup score. 75 World Cup points for first place, 50 for second place, 35 for third place. The 20 first riders to cross the finishing line will be rewarded WC-points.

- I’m in great shape and I have a feeling this can be a really good race, Emma Johansson says. The season so far has been great – I’m more aggressive, taking more chances and it has paid off.

OPEN DU SUEDE EVEN MORE POPULAR THIS YEAR

PRESS RELEASE FROM VÅRGÅRDA CYCLING CLUB 2010-07-13

The World Cup weekend in Vårgårda keeps gaining popularity among the female top riders. The starting grid in Sunday’s road race has never been so crowded.

On July 30 it’s time for the team time trial and on Augusti 1 the road race. The Open du Suède road race is a 132 kilometers long speed feast, the team trial a 41 kilometers fight against the clock.

Never before have so many riders signed up for the races in Vårgårda – 21 teams in the road race, 20 in the team time trial. Six riders in every team means 126 riders in Sunday’s race. There’s a good chance that 13 Swedish riders will participate.

Top name – of course – is Emma Johansson. Last year she wore the World Cup jersey in Vårgårda, this year she is second in the World Cup but will still be wearing a special jersey: this year’s fashion is blue and yellow. Well, it isn’t due to fashion – earlier this summer Emma Johansson won the Swedish championships. Her team-mate in Red Sun Cycling Team – Marie Lindberg – finished second.

Norwegian team Hitech Products has two Swedish riders on the roster, Sara Mustonen and Isabelle Söderberg, and Lotto Ladies Team has one, Veronica Andréasson.

It’s still to be decided if Karin Aune will be in the Fenixs team on Sunday and if Swedish time trial champion Emilia Fahlin manages to take a place in HTC-Columbia line up.

There is however an all Swedish team in the race: Alriksson Go:Green. Monica Holler (who finished third in Open du Suède in 2006), Jennie Stenerhag (Swedish champion in 2009), Madeleine Olsson (Swedish criterium champion in 2009), Jessica Kihlbom, Malin Rydlund och Linnea Sjöblom.
